Decoy pricing, a shared trademark, and one honest win

SmartSGI charges $29 for a month and $37 for three. Why that gap exists, why both sites use the same trademark, and the one term where SmartSGI is better.

7 min read Reading timeUpdated September 2026
Key facts
  • SmartSGI charges $29 for one month and $37 for three, meaning months two and three cost $4 each — the monthly plan is an anchor, not an offer
  • Smartiflix charges $14 for the same first month, less than half SmartSGI's entry price
  • SmartSGI states a 7-day refund window; Smartiflix assesses refunds case by case, so SmartSGI is the stronger promise here
  • SmartSGI advertises 34,000 channels against Smartiflix's 61,000, yet both use the identical string Anti-Freeze 9.8
  • SmartSGI sells a 24-month term at $119; Smartiflix stops at 12 months

SmartSGI's pricing page contains one of the clearest examples of decoy pricing in this market, and it is worth walking through because the same structure appears on dozens of IPTV storefronts once you know what to look for.

It also contains something odder. SmartSGI advertises “Anti-Freeze™ 9.8” — the same trademarked string, symbol included, that appears on Smartiflix plan cards. The two brands claim different catalogue sizes and are otherwise unconnected, yet they share a branded feature name down to the decimal point.

Prices below were read from SmartSGI's own subscription page on 31 August 2026. Both the pricing analysis and one genuine advantage SmartSGI holds are set out here.

The gap between $29 and $37

SmartSGI's single-device grid runs $29 for one month, $37 for three months, $49 for six, $77 for a year and $119 for two years.

Look at the first two figures. One month costs $29. Three months cost $37. The two additional months therefore cost $8 between them, or $4 each — roughly a seventh of what the first month costs. No sensible reading of that says the monthly plan is priced to be sold.

This is a decoy, and it works on a well-documented quirk of how people judge prices. Nobody has an internal sense of what a month of IPTV ought to cost, so the decision gets made by comparison instead: the $29 sits there to make $37 feel like an obvious saving. Take the monthly option away and the quarterly plan has to justify itself on its own, which is a harder job.

The effect is that SmartSGI's real entry price is $37 for a three-month commitment. That matters, because a three-month commitment is a poor way to test an IPTV service. You want the shortest possible window to check peak-hour performance before committing, and SmartSGI has priced that window at more than double what most of the market charges.

How the rest of the grid compares

Against Smartiflix at the same terms, SmartSGI is level or more expensive at every point where both publish a price:

  • One month: $29 vs $14 — Smartiflix at less than half, the widest gap in the grid
  • Three months: $37 vs $36 — effectively a tie
  • Six months: $49 vs $47 — effectively a tie
  • Twelve months: $77 vs $69 — Smartiflix by $8, about 10 per cent
  • Twenty-four months: $119 vs nothing comparable — Smartiflix does not sell a two-year term

Where SmartSGI is actually better

SmartSGI publishes a 7-day refund window. Smartiflix does not publish a fixed guarantee period; its refund policy is assessed case by case. On stated terms, that is a straightforward win for SmartSGI, and a buyer who wants a written window to fall back on has a real reason to prefer it.

Two caveats belong with that, both honest rather than defensive. A published window is a promise, not an outcome, and in a category with no regulator the enforcement mechanism is your card issuer rather than the seller's policy page. And seven days is short — short enough that you need to test deliberately during it rather than installing the app and coming back next weekend.

SmartSGI also sells a 24-month term, which no other provider in our comparison set offers except Trimix. Whether that is an advantage depends on your appetite for prepaying two years to a company with no published trading history, which we would put low.

The claim that travelled, and the one that did not

The shared “Anti-Freeze™ 9.8” string is the interesting artefact here. Branded feature names with trademark symbols are supposed to be the one thing a company does not share with a competitor. Its appearance on both sites suggests both storefronts inherited their marketing copy from the same upstream source.

What is telling is that the channel claim did not travel with it. SmartSGI advertises 34,000 live channels and 130K VOD; Smartiflix advertises 61,000 and 180K. If the two are drawing on related infrastructure, one of those pairs of numbers is being generated by the marketing department rather than counted.

That is the useful lesson from this comparison, and it generalises well beyond these two brands. Across the nine providers whose own pricing pages we could read, channel claims run from 20,000 to 61,000 — a spread of more than three times, with no audited list published anywhere by anyone. The number on the homepage is a positioning decision, and it should carry roughly no weight in your choice. Our guide to choosing a provider sets out the checks that do carry weight.

Which one to buy, and why

For most buyers, Smartiflix is the better purchase here, and the reason is concrete rather than promotional. The cheapest way to find out whether an IPTV service works in your home is a single month, tested during busy evenings, and Smartiflix sells that month for $14 while SmartSGI sells it for $29 and structures its grid to push you into a three-month commitment instead.

SmartSGI genuinely wins on the published refund window, and if a written seven-day guarantee is what makes you comfortable pressing pay, that is a legitimate basis for choosing it. It also wins by default if you specifically want a two-year term, though we would advise against wanting one.

What neither company gives you is any way to verify capacity before paying. That is unavoidable in this market, and it is why the amount you risk on the first payment matters more than any feature list. Start on the shortest plan available, test it when the network is busy, and extend only once it has held up.

Frequently asked questions

01Why is SmartSGI's monthly plan so expensive?+

Because it is not really meant to be bought. At $29 for one month and $37 for three, the second and third months cost $4 each. A price set that far above the neighbouring option exists to make the neighbouring option look generous. It is a standard retail technique, and recognising it is the whole trick — if you want to test SmartSGI, the three-month plan is the rational entry, which is exactly what the pricing intends.

02Is SmartSGI cheaper than Smartiflix?+

Not at any term we could compare directly. One month is $29 against $14, three months $37 against $36, six months $49 against $47, and a year $77 against $69. SmartSGI is level or higher throughout. It does offer a 24-month plan at $119, which Smartiflix does not sell at all, so if you want a two-year commitment there is no comparison to make.

03Does SmartSGI offer a refund?+

Its subscription page states a 7-day refund window. That is a firmer commitment than Smartiflix makes — Smartiflix assesses refunds case by case with no fixed guarantee period. Whether a stated window is honoured is a separate question from whether it is published, but on the published terms alone SmartSGI is ahead here and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

04Why do SmartSGI and Smartiflix both say Anti-Freeze 9.8?+

Because marketing language circulates between resellers in this market, usually inherited from a shared upstream supplier. The same pattern shows up with channel counts — Nigma TV advertises the identical 61,000 figure Smartiflix uses. A trademark symbol on a phrase two unrelated storefronts both use should tell you how much weight to give either one's branded feature names.

05Is a 24-month IPTV plan a good idea?+

Rarely. You are prepaying two years to an unregulated seller with no deposit protection, and the discount is compensation for accepting that risk. Two years is long enough for the operator to change hands, lose its upstream supply, or disappear. If the monthly saving is small — and at $119 over 24 months it works out near $5 — the flexibility you give up is worth more than the money you save.
