A $39 minimum, and what it costs to find out

Why the commitment floor is the number that matters

Sonix three-month floor
Editorial card. Sonix's shortest published term is three months.

Nothing a provider publishes tells you what you actually need to know. Channel counts are unaudited, uptime figures are self-reported, and capacity during a Saturday evening is invisible from the outside. The only reliable evidence comes from using the service under load, which means the purchase always precedes the information.

That inverts how you should read a price list. The question is not “what is the best value per month?” but “what is the least I can risk to get the evidence?” A provider charging $14 for a month is selling you a cheap experiment. A provider whose minimum is $39 is asking you to take more of the risk before you know anything.

Sonix's paid floor is $39. EagleCast's August page advertised 48 hours free; eaglecasts.tv now advertises 24 hours with blank dollar totals. GoCheap offers 24 hours free. IPVision states a 30-day refund window. Smartiflix sells a $14 month. Against that spread, three months at $39 is still the highest paid entry in the set. Sonix's FAQ now claims a 24-hour trial. Get that confirmed in writing. A FAQ sentence is not a checkout button.

The grid, and the one place Sonix wins

Sonix's single-connection prices are $39 for three months, $59.99 for six and $79.99 for twelve. Multi-connection plans are sold annually only: $129.99 for two, $189.99 for three, $219.99 for four.

Set against the equivalent Smartiflix terms:

  • Three months, one connection: $39 vs $36 — Smartiflix by $3
  • Six months, one connection: $59.99 vs $47 — Smartiflix by $12.99, the widest gap
  • One year, one connection: $79.99 vs $69 — Smartiflix by $10.99
  • One year, two connections: $129.99 vs $125 — Smartiflix by $4.99
  • One year, three connections: $189.99 vs $175 — Smartiflix by $14.99
  • One year, four connections: $219.99 vs $225 — Sonix by $5.01, its only win

Where Sonix is genuinely ahead: how you can pay

Sonix accepts PayPal, Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Bitcoin and USDT. That is the widest payment support of any provider we checked, and the wallet options in particular are worth something.

The reason has nothing to do with convenience. When you buy from an unregulated seller with no deposit protection, your payment method *is* your consumer protection. A card payment can be charged back through the card network's dispute process; a PayPal payment falls under its buyer protection terms; Apple Pay and Google Pay run on card rails and inherit the same recourse. A cryptocurrency payment has no reversal mechanism whatsoever — once it confirms, it is gone.

So a provider offering more reversible payment routes is offering you more ways to protect yourself, which partly offsets the higher commitment floor. If you do buy a three-month Sonix plan, pay by card or PayPal and not with the crypto option, and read our recovery guide before you need it rather than after.

The bundled VPN, and what it tells you

Sonix lists a VPN as an included feature on every plan card. This is worth pausing on, because it is a strange thing to bundle with a television service and it appears on several competitors too.

A VPN does one thing: it encrypts your traffic and routes it via another server, so your internet provider cannot see which services you connect to. It does not affect picture quality, buffering or channel availability, and it does not change the licensing status of anything you watch. Content that is unlicensed remains unlicensed whether or not the connection is encrypted.

Including it as a headline feature is therefore best read as a signal about the category rather than a product improvement. It tells you the seller expects some buyers to be concerned about visibility. That is a reasonable thing to know before you buy, and it is a good reason to understand where legal responsibility actually falls — which we set out in the IPTV explainer rather than repeating here.

Buying the information before you buy the year

Smartiflix is the better buy here on the evidence, and unusually the reasoning is not close. It is cheaper at five of the six directly comparable terms, and more importantly its $14 month lets you buy the information before you buy the year. Sonix's $39 minimum asks you to commit a quarter before you know whether the service holds up on a busy evening.

Sonix has two genuine points in its favour: a marginally cheaper four-connection year and the best payment flexibility in the set. If you specifically want four simultaneous streams for a year and you value paying by Apple Pay, it is a defensible choice — and $5 is a real saving even if a small one.

For everyone else, the sequence that protects you is the same regardless of brand: buy the shortest term available, test during the busiest hours you actually watch, and extend only once it has survived that. Smartiflix's grid starts at $14, which is what makes that sequence affordable.

Questions people actually ask

Does Sonix IPTV offer a monthly plan?+

Not on its subscription page. The shortest published paid term is still three months at $39, with six months at $59.99 and a year at $79.99. The FAQ on the same site now claims a 24-hour free trial. Ask support to confirm that trial in writing before you treat $39 as optional. If the trial is not actually issued, the cheapest paid way in is still a quarter of a year.

Is Sonix IPTV cheaper than Smartiflix?+

At almost no term. Three months is $39 against $36, six months $59.99 against $47, and a year $79.99 against $69. Multi-connection annual plans run $129.99 for two and $189.99 for three, against $125 and $175. The single exception is a four-connection year, where Sonix asks $219.99 and Smartiflix asks $225 — a $5 difference on a $220 purchase.

Why does Sonix include a VPN?+

Its plan cards list a VPN as an included feature. A bundled VPN is not a picture-quality improvement, so it is best read as an acknowledgement of what buyers in this category worry about. It does not change the legal position of any stream — a VPN conceals traffic from your internet provider, it does not make unlicensed content licensed. Our beginner's guide sets out where the law actually sits.

What payment methods does Sonix accept?+

PayPal, Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Bitcoin and USDT — the broadest set among the twelve providers we surveyed. The card and wallet options matter, because a payment made through a card network or PayPal can be disputed later, while a cryptocurrency payment cannot be reversed by anyone.

Is a three-month commitment a problem?+

It is a risk-sizing problem rather than a red flag. Three months is long enough that a service degrading at peak times becomes something you live with rather than something you exit. If you do buy in, make the payment through a reversible method and test hard in the first days, while a dispute is still realistic.
